Data Science and AI in accountancy: greater efficiency at BGH | Rademaker thanks to MKB Datalab

Posted on

BGH | Rademaker is a leading accountancy firm specializing in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Innovation and efficiency are central to their work, but when it came to data analysis, they lacked the necessary expertise. Through the JADS MKB Datalab, they were connected with student Luc Siecker, who brought fresh energy and expertise to the firm. Together, they worked on three projects that improved internal processes, accelerated workflows, and introduced new technologies to the team.

How did you get involved with MKB Datalab?

Luc: “I first heard about MKB Datalab through my studies. After a tip from a friend, I decided to sign up. Through the student pool, I was matched with Rademaker, where I worked on three challenging projects.” Stef: “We were looking for ways to professionalize data analysis within our company. We had long seen opportunities to work more efficiently, but we didn’t have the in-house knowledge to make it happen. Through the MKB Datalab website, we got in touch with Virgil and his team, and from there, the collaboration quickly took off.”

What challenges did you face before working with MKB Datalab?

Stef: “One major challenge was that we had to handle increasing workloads with fewer people. The accountancy sector is dealing with a low intake of new employees, a high outflow of experienced professionals, and growing regulations, all of which put extra pressure on our team. We saw opportunities to improve efficiency through data analysis, but we lacked the expertise to develop this ourselves.”

What were your ambitions regarding data and AI?

Stef: “We had long wanted to establish a dedicated data analysis department. Instead of solely focusing on assistant accountants, we wanted to invest in data analysts, data scientists, and data engineers. Thanks to our projects with Luc, we now have a stronger foundation to realize that ambition.”

How are you currently using data and AI?

Stef: “We have automated various analyses that were previously done manually. Tasks that used to take hours can now be completed in seconds with the push of a button, such as transaction and payroll analyses. These automated processes not only make us more efficient but also reduce the risk of errors.”

How was the collaboration with MKB Datalab?

Stef: “The collaboration was excellent. MKB Datalab challenged us to clearly define our problems, which helped shape the projects effectively. Their support, such as helping with project planning, was also incredibly valuable.” Luc: “That guidance helped me a lot. The structure provided by MKB Datalab allowed me to work efficiently while also giving me the freedom to come up with my own solutions. It was a valuable process.”

How has working at Rademaker helped you?

Luc: “The collaboration with Rademaker taught me a lot. It gave me insight into how a company operates and helped me develop practical skills. I had a lot of freedom to experiment with solutions and learned a great deal from working with the team.”

What value have these projects created for you?

Stef: “These projects have helped us work more efficiently and gain better insights into our data. They have also increased the acceptance of new technology within our organization. Things that were previously seen as ‘too difficult’ are now accessible and highly valuable.” Luc: “For me, it had a direct impact on my professional development. I not only learned new skills but also gained insight into how businesses operate.”

What are your next steps in your data journey?

Stef: “Our next step is to further implement and scale up the proof-of-concepts we developed with Luc. We want to ensure that all analyses are easy to apply for our clients and colleagues. Additionally, we will continue to expand our team and invest in the professionalization of our data department.” Luc: “I see many more opportunities to optimize processes at Rademaker. My focus now is on further developing my skills and contributing to new projects that can have an even bigger impact.”

What advice would you give to future Datalab participants?

Luc: “My advice is to step out of your comfort zone and take on different types of projects. You learn the most by challenging yourself and developing new skills. Also, take your collaboration with companies seriously, as there is so much to learn from it. It’s a unique opportunity to gain practical experience and expand your network.” Stef: “For companies, I’d say: just start. Work with MKB Datalab, invest in a data analyst, and see where it takes you. It’s an investment, but the returns can be significant.”
