Meet Master’s student Bram: “I chose JADS because of the practical side of a still technical Master.”
Posted onMeet Bram. Bram is currently a Master’s student in Data Science in Business and Entrepreneurship at JADS. He also reveals why JADS is a unique place to study and why others should choose to do this Masters. Don’t forget to also scroll down to watch the video testimonial of Bram where he shares more experiences with JADS!
What is your background?
“After high school, I went for two years to America and I studied Chemistry there. I learned a lot during that period, but it was not really my thing. So I switched to Physics in Eindhoven. I loved it, but it was a bit to mathematical for me. So I wanted something more practical in my education and that’s how I ended up at JADS.”
Why did you choose this master?
“First of all, I chose JADS because of the practical side of a still technical education. It feels like you’re already working and I feel like I got a lot of working experience from doing this Master’s. Secondly, because of the environment and the people at JADS. I believe that you are shaped to a large extent by the people around you. So I wanted to be in an environment with people that I felt comfortable with. I was at JADS for the open day and I met some people I felt comfortable learning from.”
What is your favorite course?
“My favorite course is Data Entrepreneurship in Action where you have to create your own startup. I worked really hard for this course in a way like I stopped all my other responsibilities and just focused on this. So as you can tell I really loved and enjoyed this course.”
What was your most memorable moment at JADS so far?
“A non-academic memorable moment at JADS was the introduction week with fun drinks. Also, the carnival here is always amazing. A more academic memory is the amount of teamwork we did during the courses. I spent many hours in small rooms with people working on projects. For example, we brainstormed about the new name for our startup and it was really fun.”
What is the most valuable thing you learned at JADS so far?
“The most valuable thing I have learnt so far at JADS is ‘fail fast’. I learnt this during the Data Entrepreneurship in Action courses and it basically taught me that often you don’t get the right answer the quickest by doing endless hours of research, but by thinking of something and just trying it out. It will probably not work, but you will learn a lot from that failure and you can improve it next time.”
Can you give an example of a case you worked on?
“I would say the nicest case I’ve worked on during my master at JADS is creating our startup named Spot with two friends during the Data Entrepreneurship in Action course. Spot is an assistant for job searching and is actually a case we created ourselves. It was really fun and I learned the most from it.”
What do you think of the campus of JADS?
“I like many things about the JADS campus. I like the beautiful garden in the middle of the city center. It is really nice to just relax in the summer. We also have a nice bar, a Pattern room with a table tennis table and the main lecture hall, the chapel, is beautiful as well. I think that the chapel is one of the signifying places at JADS.”
What are your future plans?
“I’m currently finishing my Master’s thesis in ethical AI, so I’m thinking a lot about what I want to do next. I’ve learnt that I’m quite impact-driven, so I’d like to have a career where I can really make an impact. I think I will either end up at the startup or start my own thing in applied AI, ethical AI or somewhere in that area.”
Why should someone choose this Master?
“I think someone should choose this Master’s if they enjoy working with computers and like to take initiative. Another thing that makes JADS different from other universities is that JADS has a very small campus and offers only one Master, which makes it very personal. I think it is much easier to create your own journey here. So if you like a small, cosy and personal environment, JADS is the right fit for you!”
