Meet Master’s student Jane: ‘The combination between Data Science and Business was exactly what I was looking for.’
Posted onMeet Jane. Jane is currently a Master’s student in Data Science in Business and Entrepreneurship at JADS with a background in software engineering. In this interview, she shares why she choose this Master’s program and why she thinks JADS is unique. Read on to discover her favorite course, what she did outside the curriculum, her future plans and some advice for potential international students like herself. Don’t forget to also scroll down to watch the video of Jane where she shares her experiences with JADS!
What is your background?
“I have a background in software engineering and did my Bachelor’s at Fontys, the University of applied sciences. During my Bachelor, I did a minor at TU/e where I learned more about the theoretical part of computer science. After getting my degree, I worked for a year as a software developer.”
Why did you choose this master?
“While I was working, I thought it might be nice to get some more experience and knowledge in Data Science. I chose for this Master at JADS because it’s connected to business. So I would gain knowledge about Data Science, but also about how it is applied in the business sphere. Besides, JADS is very practically oriented and I have a practical background. I did applied sciences and really enjoyed my hands on learning experience. So I really wanted to continue that journey of hand on experience together with more theoretical knowledge.”
What is your favorite course?
“My favorite course is ‘Data Entrepreneurship in Action’. We get a sort of simulation of how to start and launch your own startup. We are trying out our idea from the stage of it actually being information to the stage where we present our ideas to actual investors. It’s a sort of shark tank scenario. That is what makes this course actually really relevant and interesting because it gives us the feeling of actually having a startup.”
What did you do at JADS outside of the curriculum?
“I joined the International Research Project last summer. It’s a collaboration project from the Technical University that includes three studies, Operation Management, Industrial Management and JADS’ Data Science in Business and Entrepreneurship. Together with 21 students we worked on a project that had two parts. The first part was working on an actual research project for a company and the second part was that we went to South Korea and Singapore. We got to meet a lot of companies there and we experienced how companies operate in such countries. What I found really interesting was that the knowledge I learned, for example prescriptive algorithms at JADS, was really applied in the companies there. That was really fascinating!”
What is the most unique thing about JADS?
“In my eyes what makes JADS unique is first of all the combination of Data Science and business subjects. Secondly, the practical part of things. For every course you will be doing a project, so you’re not only learning theory but you actually get to apply the theory that you learned. Lastly, you will not only learn technical skills, but also soft skills, like how to communicate, how to solve the issue and how to be a good teammate.”
What do you think of the campus of JADS?
“I feel like JADS is kind of Hogwarts. It’s looks really mysterious and really cozy. So I like the outlook of our campus, but I also really like the facilities of the JADS building. There are a lot of rooms where we can work together on our group projects, but there are also a lot of quiet areas where you can study alone. It also feels sort of home because everywhere you go you see your classmates or people you know. So it is a very close and cozy environment.”
What are your future plans?
“After I finish my master, I plan to work a few more years for the industry. I want to probably go into consulting and work on different projects to develop my Data Science skills even more. After that I hope to start my own company, but we will see.”
Why should someone chose this master?
“You should choose this Master’s if you want to get experience and knowledge within a practical focus, because you will mostly be working on projects. These projects are for actual companies, so it is a safe environment for you to try out how this is going to be in the real world. If you want to experience real life scenarios without yet working for a company, JADS is a perfect place for you!”
Do you have any suggestions for international students?
“My advice would be to go to as many international activities as possible or to activities in general. For example for JADS, the Pattern board organizes a lot of events where you get to meet your cohort but also the cohort of previous or next years. So I would say, get to know more people, take as much opportunities as you can and just try to connect.”
