PDEng changes to EngD per September 2022

Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) degree will change its name to Engineering Doctorate (EngD) starting September 1, 2022. The reason for this name change is that the universities of applied sciences (HBO) in the Netherlands will have their own doctorate programs starting September 2022, which will be named Professional Doctorate (PD). To avoid confusion and to keep the difference in education clear, the four technical universities decided jointly to change the name from PDEng to EngD.
In the Netherlands, the PDEng title has been used for post-master designer education since 2004. This degree certifies that a student completed a post-graduate program after completing a Master of Science. The PDEng programs are specific to and organized by the technical universities in the Netherlands, under the 4TU Federation.
EngD: a more industry-oriented alternative to PhD with data driven opportunities for businesses
JADS offers the Engineering Doctorate Data Science EngD program. This two-year post-master’s program qualifies its students to become top-level professional data scientists. The program is a more industry-oriented alternative to PhD with data driven opportunities for businesses. Whilst a PhD is focused on a career as an independent researchers, an EngD prepares a trainee for an industrial career as a technological designer. As a student you work closely with a company with a real life case, and as a business your work together with the EngD data science trainees on the development of new models specifically for the organization.
From PDEng to EngD
The new EngD title will be formally used starting September 1, 2022, on the diplomas issued by all PDEng programs. All PDEng programs in the Netherlands will be referred to as EngD programs. On content side nothing will change. Our PDEng/EngD program Data Science will continue to educate data scientists and designers, with the same focus on knowledge acquisition and professional skills training in a real-life project setting. An EngD project offers a wide range of possibilities for a business. You can design and develop data driven decision-making processes based on real, actionable data for your organization. Work together with our EngD data science trainees on the development of new models specifically for your organization. This will be done during a dedicated data science project (10-12 months) at your company.
